DENVER — The American Cancer Society is currently funding 17 multi-year research grants in Colorado totaling over $10.4 million.

Dr. Elizabeth Kessler, a medical oncologist at the University of Colorado Cancer Center, is the recipient of one of those grants. Dr. Kessler is researching a care planning framework for patients with advanced bladder cancer.

Bladder cancer can strike anyone, but most patients are men in their 70s. Dr. Kessler said her research is looking at ways of aligning the care these patients get with their regular health care needs.

“We are really developing a framework to guide cancer treatment planning for older patients with bladder cancer that can be adapted to other clinical settings,” Dr. Kessler said. “Patients have told us this is important, and the American Cancer Society really recognizes the importance of this patient centered clinical research.”

All of the money raised by the Colorado NovemBeard campaign will be used to fund research like Dr. Kessler’s, as well as patient services provided by the American Cancer Society.
