Ohio State’s College of Medicine had 2,280 grants awarded in fiscal year 2020, a nearly 6% increase from fiscal year 2019. More than 60 of those grants awards were in amounts of more than $1 million.

The Ohio State University College of Medicine has set a record in research funding.

The College of Medicine received $300.9 million in grants and contracts during the 2020 fiscal year, up about 10% from the previous year.

“Numbers are great, but I think what this is really showing is the impact of Ohio State and the impact of research, being able to come up with solutions and real solutions that are impacting people’s health,” said Peter Mohler, vice dean of Research at the College of Medicine.

There were 2,280 grants awarded in fiscal year 2020, a nearly 6% increase from fiscal year 2019. Ohio State’s fiscal year runs July through June. Of those grants, 64 were more than $1 million.

The awards from fiscal year 2020 include a $7.5 million grant from the United States Department of Defense to research how to avoid disasters when humans control complex machines such as automobiles, airplanes and ships, and a $5.5 million grant from the American Heart Association to study the health effects of e-cigarettes and nicotine on youth.

“This will serve central Ohio, all of Ohio and, frankly, the nation well as we continue to do this important research that will translate into meaningful patient care,” said Dr. Timothy Pawlik, the chair of the Department of Surgery at the College of Medicine.

The College of Medicine received $176.3 million in grants, contracts and subcontracts from the National Institutes of Health in fiscal year 2020. The rest of the funds were from other government agencies, non-profit foundations and industry contracts.

The increase in research funding is attributed to investigative projects, the growth of existing strategic areas, recruiting new faculty, new relationships with industry partners and increased collaboration at Ohio State.

The grants allowed the College of Medicine to advance in the areas of neuroscience, cardiopulmonary, cancer, immunology and infectious disease.

So what’s next for the College of Medicine?

“My hope this year is to continue to expand and really continue to focus on using researchers and our teams to create solutions that really are going to be seen in the living rooms of people in Ohio in just a couple of years,” Mohler said.
