You’re right bushy tails, I should have said MOST people don’t care how weird you are. There are extremists out there and I think the author of this press release is one of them. Unfortunately, many people are fueled by the hate the media spreads, but let’s not buy into it by blaming god and trump. Many Americans are religious and/or conservative and that’s OK. When given a choice between 2 parties, naturally we will divide into halves and the pendulum will swing. I think jargon like “how has the patriarchy, gender binary, traditional monogamy, and heterocentrism shaped tools of emotional abuse[…]?” deepens the divide. If I can’t understand it how can the small minded folk who are apparently the problem? I think a lot of conservative Americans would like to just continue living their lives without pressure to adopt this new vocabulary. Perhaps they can’t wrap their head around why their seemingly normal lifestyle “monogamy, heterosexuality, etc” is under fire. I mean, in today’s world am I to feel guilty for being “the patriarchy”? We have thousands of years of conquest behind us and now it’s my fault because I’m a white straight guy? Forgive me if this sounds callous: heterosexuality is the biological reproductive norm. Homosexuality is the anomaly! And that is OK! If somebody believes it is wrong because the Bible said so, well they sadly missed the point! With that understood, can’t we all live our lives and be happy and respectful to one another regardless of how we’re wired? I have to ask myself why I am even so worked up enough to spend my time writing this? It’s because I care! My mother came out as a lesbian when I was 12 (I am now 31)and I have lived through her struggle with her. She truly just wants to be herself and live her life. She doesn’t go to pride fest or make a big deal of being different. In fact when I told her I went to pride fest in SF, she chuckled and said “they give us a bad name.” And THAT is the point I am trying to make. What I witnessed at pride fest was not so much a community demonstrating unity, solidarity, and pride, but rather a demonstration of how freaky disgusting people could be in public and get away with it. That’s what the conservatives in the rest of the country see and base their judgements on. Can you blame them? All I am asking for is decency and respect from all sides, and trust me we can all find common ground. It’s a shame that so many progressive movements are tarnished by attention seeking radicals who use the movement as a platform to further their own agenda. And that is what I see happening with this focus group. I know plenty of homosexuals of the older generation who would rather not identify with this new age of millennial attention seeking bulls**t.
And for the record, I do not support Trump or his hateful ideology, nor did I vote for him, but many of his constituents happen to be good people who have been duped by our 2 party system. If we always hate the other half of our country, we are doomed…
