Ryan Lowe has challenged the strikers in his Plymouth Argyle squad to prove they should be playing in the first team

Dom Telford has recently returned to fitness after a seven-week absence due to a hamstring injury.

The 22-year-old has played as a substitute in each of the last four games, with Lowe sticking with the same starting line-up for each one.

The Pilgrims’ boss has gone with Joel Grant and Byron Moore in attack, with Telford, Ryan Taylor, Billy Clarke and Zak Rudden also options to play up front.

The latter quartet were all on the substitutes’ bench for the 1-1 FA Cup second round draw against Bristol Rovers at the Memorial Stadium on Sunday.

So there is a fierce competition for places shaping up among the strikers.

Grant leads the way when it comes to goals with five, with Moore and Taylor on three each, while Rudden and Telford have two apiece.

Telford looked particularly lively when he came off the bench against Bristol Rovers.

The former Bury striker had one good shooting opportunity but dragged his shot wide.

Lowe said: “He’s nearly up to speed on his runs, his sprints, and his distances.

“He’s not far off. We were contemplating on putting him in the team (against Rovers) but Joel and Byron have been fantastic.

“Joel was good in spells on Sunday and Byron was good in spells.

“As I have said to the strikers, we have got a lot of them now and it’s over to them once they get their opportunity.

“I thought Dom could have done a little bit better with the chance he dragged wide.”
