Associate Editor — NBC News Brand Studio
The award-winning NBC News Brand Studio is seeking an Associate Editor to join its growing team. Working across NBC’s News properties — TODAY, CNBC, NBC News and MSNBC — the Brand Studio works with a wide variety of clients to tell compelling stories that inform our audiences and raise awareness of the brands we work with.
OVERVIEW
We are seeking candidates with a journalism background who know how to sort through information and find the compelling story. Candidates should have the ability to work well on tight deadlines, synthesize information quickly and turn around a compelling pitch that would add value to both readers and clients. Exceptional writing and editing skills are essential. In addition to writing and editing, the Associate Editor will work on post-sale campaigns to ensure seamless execution. The position reports to the Managing Editor and is initially a one-year role, with high potential for long-term.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Pre-sale/Development: (~15 hours/week)
- Meet with sales and marketing to brainstorm content programs for RFPs (average of six per week)
- Research and write compelling story pitches for RFP responses/proposals
- Answer questions for RFPs going through the pre-sale process, including building timelines, providing cost estimates and Brand Studio core deck, etc.
Post-sale/Active: (~15 hours/week)
- Write and edit articles and other original material, including landing page and social copy
- Source freelance writers to produce work
- Liaise with other in-house teams in coordinating execution of campaigns
- Manage internal deadlines across projects
- Manage gathering of assets for client deliverables, including articles, videos, tout and social copy and rich media units
- Uploading text and images to websites using our content management systems
- Work with third-party vendors on rich media unit setup and QA
- Backcheck and QA client feedback
- Proofread stories for accuracy, NBC style, client style
- Proofread client-supplied content for NBC style
- Get sign-off from Editorial Director of creative assets prior to delivery to client
Ongoing: (~10 hours/week)
- Weekly Brand Studio Status meeting
- Daily Brand Studio Production Meeting
- Ad-hoc RFP brainstorms / Presentations / Client status calls
- Update editorial road map and alert Editorial of upcoming content launches
- Work with project manager on an ongoing basis to update pipeline and archive campaigns
SKILLS
In order to fulfill the responsibilities of Associate Editor, the ideal candidate will possess:
- Excellent written and oral communication skills with exceptional command of English
- First-rate proofreading skills
- Adept at administrative components of the position, such as creating timelines and preparing client-facing deliverables
Though not mandatory, desired attributes include:
- Self-motivation and flexibility
- More-than-a-passing knowledge of current affairs / business / technology
- Excellent people, time-management and organizational skills
EDUCATION
- Bachelor’s degree in English, Journalism, Communication preferred
EXPERIENCE
- Four to five years of experience in journalism, editing or research required
