GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KJCT) – In December, Congress and the President approved a $350 million increase in dementia research.
This record-level funding is big news for 73,000 Coloradans who are live with Alzheimer’s. The disease is the 6TH highest cause of death in the United States and is the only disease without a prevention, treatment, or cure. Locally, Colorado Chapters of the Alzheimer’s Association has added to that national funding with dollars raised through events like the Walk to End Alzheimer’s.
“That money goes primarily for two different programs and one is our day-to-day programs where we provide programs and services, education, counseling for individuals and families at no charge. The other use of that money is to fund research to fund a treatment or a cure for Alzheimer’s,” says Jim Herlihy of the Alzheimer’s Association.
The Colorado Chapter is putting money towards many initiatives, including the training of the next generation of researchers.
