CFPB Acting Director Seeks New Attorneys; Issues Consumer Education Priorities

Consumer Financial Protection Bureau Acting Director David Ueijo added to his priorities for the bureau this week by announcing a recruitment effort for attorneys as well as policy initiatives for the Division of Consumer Education and External Affairs.

“Our mission is to help consumer finance markets work by making rules more effective, by consistently and fairly enforcing those rules, and by empowering consumers to take more control over their economic lives,” Uejio said in the blog post on new attorney recruitment. “Achieving this goal requires vigorous oversight of all applicable federal laws and the fullest utilization of our legal authorities.”

The bureau is seeking attorneys at all experience levels to assist with multiple bureau functions.

Uejio also shared updates from his meeting with the Division of Consumer Education and External Affairs (CEEA) and policy priorities.

“From rulemaking to COVID education to increasing racial equities to punishing bad actors, CEEA will seek out, listen to, and integrate consumer voices into all bureau priorities,” Uejio said in the Feb. 10 blog post.

Specific priorities for CCEA include:

  • Review companies’ consumer complaint responses.
  • Help consumers navigate housing protections for those impacted by COVID-19.
  • Refresh the bureau’s website to make it more user friendly and focused on consumer rights.
  • Rebuild and repair the bureau’s relationships with consumer, civil rights, racial justice, and tribal and Indigenous rights groups.

Uejio’s other recent priorities announced for the bureau focus on the Division of Research Markets and Regulations and relief for consumers facing hardship due to COVID-19 and the related economic crisis as well as racial equity, ACA International previously reported.

The bureau is also reviewing enforcement and supervision policies from the last administration.

ACA stands ready to work with the new administration and bureau leadership on behalf of members and the accounts receivable management industry.
