Grimsby Town are reportedly looking at former Norwich City forward Pierre Fonkeu as Ian Holloway looks to make more signings before January.

The Mariners boss has been casting his eye over a number of free agents in recent weeks, with two more arriving at Cheapside yesterday ahead of this weekend’s derby against Scunthorpe United.

Filipe Morais became the first signing since the summer transfer window last week, while Holloway revealed yesterday that one of his trialists is a forward who had trained with Town previously before lockdown.

The player in question is reported to be Fonkeu, according to BBC Radio Humberside, and a short-term deal could now be in the offing for the 23-year-old.

Fonkeu began his career in Belgium with Club Brugge, playing in their Club NXT academy before joining Norwich after a pre-season trial in 2017.

He scored three goals in 23 games in his first season for the Canaries’ Under-23s, but his second year was hindered by injury and saw him make just two appearances and scoring in a 4-1 defeat to Southampton.

He was released by Norwich in 2019, and subsequently signed for French side RC Lens, where he made just one appearance off the bench for their B team.

Having trained with the Mariners earlier this year, he then made the move to Bulgaria as he joined PFC Beroe Stara Zagora, where he again made just one appearance from the bench, and is now on the lookout for a new club.

Fonkeu has also earned call-ups for Cameroon U23s, having been named in their squad for the 2019 Africa U23 Cup of Nations, although he didn’t make an appearance as they went out at the group stage.
