Vicky Cutroneo, Howard County Board of Education Member posted the following information on Facebook concerning the upcoming virtual focus group session about Service Resource Offices (SROs) in Howard County Public Schools (HCPSS):

From DEI Dr Gilbert:

SRO Focus Groups:
208 applicants
119 support SROs
34 oppose SROs
55 no position on SROs

Of these applicants, 42 people were selected randomly to participate. 14 Support SROs, 14 Oppose SROs, and 14 no position. This represents about 20% of the applications.

Focus groups are designed to give the Board an understanding of why people on each side of the issue feel the way they do; it is important that we have views from all sides. Stacking groups with one side of issue benefits no one and I appreciate the Dr Gilbert and the DEI’s office efforts towards this end.

The names of participants will not be released and though I’m all about transparency, I agree whole heartedly with this.

This information is from HCPSS:

Howard County Government and the Howard County Public School System (HCPSS) are sponsoring a series of virtual feedback sessions, designed to hear from as many stakeholders as possible on the School Resource Officer (SRO) program in HCPSS. The first of these sessions is a virtual focus group for the students and families of middle and high schools with SROs

The virtual focus group will be held on October 5, 2020 from 6:30 – 8:00 p.m. Those not chosen to participate in this focus group will have an opportunity to give their feedback on SROs as part of a virtual town hall scheduled on November 12, 2020.

###

Interesting fact…208 applicants applied to provide feedback in this format:

  • 57% of applicants support SROs
  • 16% of applicants oppose SROs
  • 26% of applicants have no opinion on SROs

As more information is released I will try and do what I can to cover it here on the blog.
