Former Madison Consolidated High School star Danny Gibson took home Most Valuable Player honors during the NBL Finals in Bulgaria over the weekend.
Gibson, a 2002 Madison graduate and 2006 graduate of Southern Indiana University, scored 30 points in Lukoil Academic Sofia’s series-clinching win over Beroe.
“I feel great. I am very happy about my team, the coaches, the management, the president and everyone,” Gibson told Bulgarian National Television. “I came to Lukoil to win the title and our goal was achieved. This is the first championship in my career. I’m very happy and the feeling is incredible.”
The championship was Lukoil’s third-straight and the 14th in its history. The team has dominate the Bulgarian league, winning every title but one since 2003.
Gibson played a huge part in the win, draining seven 3-pointers in the Game Four win. As a team Lukoil hit 16 treys at a 53.3 percent clip to pull away.
In addition to Gibson, Lukoil got nine points, seven rebounds and four assists from Asen Velikov.
