CASPER, Wyo. — Casper PRIDE has announced that Pride events for 2020 will be postponed, but said they are heading forward with a needs survey for the LGBTQ community in Casper.

Pride, a nationwide series of events events celebrating lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer, will be postponed for Casper. Events had originally been scheduled for June 10-14. The postponement comes in the wake of the global coronavirus caused COVID-19 pandemic.

“It is with heavy but brave hearts that we are announcing PRIDE 2020 as officially postponed. Stay tuned for plans as we navigate this together,” Casper PRIDE said on Facebook late last week. “In the meantime, we have a far-reaching vision that we are working on.”

Casper PRIDE is conducting a Community Needs Assessment for the LGBTQ community in Casper, in partnership with an organization called the he Henne Group. Together, Casper PRIDE says they hope to identify local needs of the LGBTQ community in Casper.

“We want to hear from you! We believe our community has something valuable to share with us and this is our opportunity to hear it and act on it,” Casper PRIDE’s Amber Pollock said. “Our goal is to understand service delivery and resource needs in our community so we can develop a hub of resources to meet those needs,” she stated. Pollock, who has visited other states’ resource centers, feels that Casper is ready for a model of its own and this project aims to provide that.

Pollock says the Henne Group will be performing digital focus groups throughout the month of April with members of the LGBTQ community, to gather the necessary information for the next step of this project. Once the focus groups have been conducted, the group and Casper PRIDE will create a community needs assessment survey.

“We want to hear from our key stakeholders” Grace Niemitalo, Casper Pride committee member, stated. “When we hear directly from the community, we don’t have to guess how to proceed. We have a clearly defined map laid out before us,” she stated.
